The Ontario
Ministry of Education introduced a revised curriculum in mathematics
for Grades 1–10 in Fall 2005. This revised curriculum is a
refinement of the mathematics curriculum introduced in elementary
schools in 1997 and in secondary schools in 1999 for grades 9 and
10. As with all such important initiatives, those responsible for
the initiative are interested in knowing whether it is working.
As with all complex issues, many things need to be considered. Although
much research has been done to examine particular aspects of curriculum
implementation and student achievement, there has been no comprehensive
research to examine how this curriculum is
being implemented in classrooms across the province. While curriculum
documents can produce an intended curriculum, an examination of
the taught curriculum is called for before links between curriculum
and student achievement can be fully understood.
This research
question addresses the following three research questions:
• How is this revised curriculum being implemented in Grades
7-10 across the province?
• In what ways is this curriculum implementation supported?
• In classrooms where the revised curriculum is implemented
what are the results?
|
| The
research questions are addressed through a multi-faceted research
design that includes questionnaires, interviews and case studies.
The project begins with a synthesis of current research concerning
curriculum implementation, student achievement, and teachers’
professional development. In addition, we carry out an analysis of
the curriculum to fully understand its intent and content. The information
gathered through the interviews and questionnaires will help to identify
sites, including classrooms, departments or schools, that are implementing
all aspects of the current curriculum. These sites then serve as case
study locations to examine the implementation of the curriculum and
its connection to student mathematics understanding. |
